Sometimes I go by Jay.
What got you into fashion?
When I was in High School I was really into Punk Rock and I started making my own clothes. I would buy clothes from thrift stores and add my own twist to the pieces by putting embellishments, paint, and sewing stuff on them.
Can you elaborate a little bit on what type of punk music you listen to?
I listen to punk bands from the 80s. One of my favorite punk bands are Rudimentary Peni because they don’t sound like your average band.
Pursuing design at Academy of Art, what are your main inspirations when you sketch/design your pieces?
I pull a lot of my inspirations from many types of sources. A lot of times I like to observe people on the street. Especially, specific age groups who can pull off unique silhouettes.
Do you have any particular hobbies?
I like to do a lot of sketches. I have also had this job as a house painter for the past 5-6 years and so I’ve taken what I’ve learned to build things around the house. I really enjoy transforming spaces in a way.
What’re you looking forward to this year?
There has been a lot of protest on racial and gender inequality this year. And I have been attending these movements because I strongly believe in social equality.
